It’s a real joy owning a dog a constant companion, friend and confidant. They can also be a real rock for someone on their own and an anchor binding a family together and on top of that most serve as dedicated bodyguards and early warning systems to alert you or warn off approaching strangers.
In most cases our canine buddy will be everything we could wish for and be a real delight and if you have owned a dog in the past or have friends who do, you will relate to how these or their pet behave and the gap in comparisons can be huge. With saint like, mannerly with impeccable obedience at one end of the spectrum and some wild furniture munching beast at the other.
Now it goes without saying that there is no shortage of dog training advice online and I can recommend that you try to figure out what it is you want your dog to do, lets say your dog runs away at every opportunity then try finding information on “stop my dog running away” if you want to stop your dog barking then “how to stop my dog barking” should be what search phrases you use. See below, example of DVD returned by that search term

Most towns have training classes you can visit and viewing the phonebook, internet and look newspaper ads will help you locate them. most classes are not large and there are usually a variety of breeds and mannerisms too, some have some very good trainers and some don’t and if you have attended these in the past you will know this to well.
A lot of these coaches tend to have a set method and if that doesn’t work, you tend to get dubbed as being the failure not them. So should you try local training groups. 100% yes the socialising of your dog, sharing views with other owners makes it worthwhile alone. The root is they are there to have their dog trained too. If the class isn’t working, try another. You can go and watch most before you commit any cash to see if you are happy with the instructor and their methods and hopefully see some results.
There are 1 on 1 sessions you can book aswell these tend, obviously to be more expensive but needs and money do needs and money do! Just be careful about who you use and get the costs and referrals in advance, previous happy customers is usually a good sign, however as with other methods some trainers can be limited in skill and experience. Again shop around to find the right person to work with.
Regardless of what method you decide to use the training goes on outside class too, thats right. What you do at home as equally important, especially if you want to get permanent results. Most people aren’t looking some wonder dog and would be proud and grateful that their pet can be called to heel will sit, stay, fetch and most importantly not run away at the drop of a hat! There are endless amount of books, DVD’S, articles, videos and advice online that you can access for reference to continue what you have learnt at home, in some cases you may wish to do the training entirelly on your own using some of the above media methods as your sole source, again it should be your and your budgets decision.
Using video and books or a combination, can be very if not more effective. I have reviewed numerous courses, books, videos, dvds, personal, trainers, classes and any other media I could find to get my own dogs trained. Most of the above methods had some results but video on an ongoing basis has been my saviour, because it has been at close hand and easy to follow and reference my particular favourite is” Secrets To Dog Training” This particular trainer has years of experience and has plenty of teaching styles and I just liked the way his methods seem to work for my own dogs.
So to recap local training can be found using Yell or other directories, church notice boards, or board ad displays, personal trainers similar methods or by asking your local pet food store and by way of a verbal reccomendation from your vet, goes a long way. books and magazines from your library, amazon, eBay, local or favourite bookstore. Good luck with whatever method you choose and I hope you manage to get the results that I have. Sometimes it can be a long search to find what works but the end result are worth there weight in gold, so keep faith and I hope this article has been of interest and helpful please come back and let me know how things are progressing.
I would be delighted to hear any advice or tips that can be shared via this site with other readers, so please feel free to add you own comments.
